At the final gathering of my program, I asked my friends “So, is a master in IO Psychology worth it?” – The answer is actually mixed. Some say yes it was worth it, others said they should have done a counseling degree, or they just should not do the degree at first hand.
I think even the question itself is really general – what do you mean by worth it? For me, it is whether I achieved what I set out to do or not.
There are many factors that help decide whether graduate school is worth it or not, some are within our reach and some are out of reach. In addition, some factors are easy to answer, some requires time and growth
Some factors that I can think of are:
The quality of the program and the school
The opportunities appeared throughout the duration
What is happening in the country, the region, the field
Resources you receive
The experiences you got
Whether the knowledge gained is helpful
Whether you get good return on investment
What are other alternatives that I could have done?
For me, I think the graduate degree was worth it. I got to experiment other things that I set out to do even with lots of struggle and unexpected situations.
It is important to set out the criteria for you to measure whether the graduate experience is worth it or not. Just like pre-test post-test. You can only compare to the goal you set out to achieve and the old version of you before going into grad school
